The pedal (10) rotates about a fixed pedal spindle (14) carried by the bulkhead (16) oriented along axis transverse to the vehicle. The pedal is connected to a connecting rod (18) which engages, through a transmission element (28), with means for returning the force applied to the pedal to a vehicle part. In the event of collision the relative movement towards the front of a vehicle structure element (40) causes disconnection between the pedal and the rod. The mounting device comprises a rocker (34) rotating about the pedal spindle which when it is struck by the structure element pivots about the pedal spindle from an initial position to an intermediate position where it exerts a force on the connecting rod so as to break the connection between the pedal and the rod.
