PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read an image pickup signal from a CCD imaging device and to display a monitor image without increasing power consumption in an image pickup apparatus using the high-pixel CCD imaging device. SOLUTION: The CCD imaging device is provided with a plurality of photo-diodes 11 arrayed in the shape of matrix and connected to a vertical CCD 13, the first vertical CCD (one column) for vertically transferring electric charges with first vertical transfer pulses V1 and V3, second vertical CCD 13 (two or three columns) for vertically transferring electric charges with second vertical transfer pulses V1-2, V1-3, V3-2 and V3-3, and a horizontal CCD 14 for transferring electric charges from the first vertical CCD and the second vertical CCD. Further, a pulse for reading the photo-diodes 11 is superimposed on the first vertical transfer pulses V1 and V3, but the pulse for reading the photo-diodes is not superimposed on the second vertical transfer pulses V1-2, V1-3, V3-2 and V3-3.
