PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an underwater sliding member which has sufficient abrasion resistance even in an environment having a high foreign matter concentration and has excellent sliding properties under a condition of dry operation in a start and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The underwater sliding member comprises a laminate of a ceramic fiber fabric containing a phenol resin composition composed of 5-40 wt.% of one or more of fillers selected from graphite, polytetrafluoroethylene, boron nitride and amorphous carbon and the rest of a phenol resin.
