PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection image display device which performs quick and accurate focusing and whose cost and size are reduced. SOLUTION: The projection display device has a pair of photodetecting means 4 (4a and 4b) for photodetecting images which are displayed on a surface to be projected and have reference patterns for focusing, a first focusing means for performing focusing by driving a lens member 2 by a phase differential detecting system based on the outputs from a pair of the photodetecting means and a second focusing means for performing focusing by driving the lens member 2 by a contrast detecting system based on the output from at least one photodetecting means of a pair of the photodetecting means.
