PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a precursor of a rare earth-activated fluorinated barium halide-based fluorophor; to provide a method for producing the fluorophor; and to provide the nearly spherical fluorophor. SOLUTION: The method for producing the precursor of the rare earth-activated fluorinated barium halide-based fluorophor comprises a step for dissolving a halide except a fluoride, and a water-soluble macromolecular material in an aqueous medium to prepare a reaction mother liquor having an ion concentration of the halide from 3.0 mol/L to a saturated concentration at 0-80°C at pH 5.0-14.0, a step for adding an aqueous solution of a barium compound, an aqueous solution of a fluoride and an aqueous solution of a halide to the reaction mother liquor while keeping the temperature to form particles in the reaction solution, a step for subjecting the reaction solution to a water-soluble material-removing treatment, a step for adding an aqueous solution containing a rare earth compound, and optionally an alkaline earth metal compound and an alkali metal compound to the reaction solution to precipitate the nearly spherical precursor particles of the fluorophor, and a step for separating the precursor particles of the fluorophor from the reaction solution.
