The method involves acquiring physical measurement values and data characterizing the current operating situation and feeding these to a control and regulation device for comparison with stored values. When a defined stored operating system has been recognized, corresponding clutch actuation, shift and/or engine influencing functions are sought and activated so that shifting is carried out in accordance with the operating situation. The method involves controlling and regulating the shift process depending on physical measurement values. Physical measurement values and data characterizing the current operating situation are acquired by sensors and equipment in the motor vehicle and fed to a control and regulation device (1) for comparison with stored values. When a defined stored operating system has been recognized, corresponding clutch actuation, shift and/or engine influencing functions are sought and activated so that shifting is carried out in accordance with the operating situation.
