PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic imaging unit which easily detects a foreign material deposited on protection glass, which can not be eliminated only through vibration of protection glass, to prevent thereby the foreign material from being imprinted into a photographed image, and the protection glass from being damaged or broken. SOLUTION: In one embodiment, the electronic imaging unit having a dust proof mechanism to remove dust deposited on the surface of a dust proof filter by vibrating the dust proof filter placed on a front face of a photoelectric conversion element for converting an optical image of an object into an electric signal includes: a monitor means for detecting the amplitude of the vibration of the dust proof filter; a storage means for storing in advance an output value of the monitor means when the dust proof filter is vibrated in the vicinity of the resonance frequency of the dust proof filter; and a discrimination means for discriminating whether or not the foreign material exists on the dust proof filter by comparing the output value of the monitor means with a stored value of the storage means depending on whether the both are in a prescribed relation during carrying out of dust removal operations by the dust proof filter.
