PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source for a projector capable of easily miniaturizing the projector without lowering theavailability of light. SOLUTION: The light source for the projector having a lamp and a reflector for emitting radiated light from the lamp from an emitting aperture part has an optical element for refracting the radiated light from the lamp in a reverse direction to the emitting direction of the reflector around the lamp. It is desirable to use a cylindrical prism or a cylindrical lens as the optical element. By such constitution, it is possible to make NA which is required for a relay optical system for illumination and a projection lens small, so that the projector is easily miniaturized.
