<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the repulsion force of a ball hitting part by which a ball is frequently hit, and to increase a carry. <P>SOLUTION: This iron type golf club head 1 comprises a face plate 2 on which face grooves are provided with intervals, and a head main body 3 on the front surface of which the face plate 2 is arranged. The face plate 2 includes a peripheral edge part which is fixed to the head main body, a non-supporting part 9 which forms a region surrounded by the peripheral edge part, and of which the back surface is away from the head main body. The head main body 3 is equipped with an annular face attaching part which fixes the peripheral edge part of the face plate, around an opening○which longitudinally penetrates the head main body 3. Thus, on the back surface of the face plate 2, the non-supporting part 9 which is formed of a part facing to the opening○is provided. The non-supporting part 9 satisfies formulae (1) to (3) with a height A (mm) at the end part closest to the toe side of the face groove, a height B (mm) at the end part closest to the heel side of the face groove, and a height C (mm) at a central location between the end part on the toe side and the end part on the heel side.
