PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a crosshead type internal combustion engine equipped with a simple steam expansion device that can collect exhaust gas energy at low cost, without separately installing expansion devices, such as a collection turbine and steam turbine. SOLUTION: This crosshead type internal combustion engine is equipped with a steam chamber that is defined and formed by a back surface of a piston, an internal surface of a cylinder liner and an outer peripheral surface of a piston rod and feeds/exhausts pressurized steam acting on the back surface of the piston, a steam pipe that connects the steam chamber to a steam generation source generating the pressurized steam by using exhaust heat exhausted by the internal combustion engine, and a selector valve for switching feeding/exhausting of the pressurized steam to the steam chamber by opening/closing the passage of the steam pipe.
