PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of realizing a high speed image read operation by removing time delay in starting to fetch an image, and to provide an automatic assembly device using the image reading apparatus. SOLUTION: A signal line 19 directly connects: a light receiving part control part 13a for controlling the output operation of an image signal from a light receiving part 11 having a plurality of pixels; and an image fetch start signal output part 20b of a device body control part 20. When the image fetch start signal is received through the signal line 19, the light receiving part control part 13a immediately starts the output operation of the image signal from the light receiving part 11. Thus, it is made possible to start to fetch an image without decoding any signal, and to realize a high speed image read operation by removing time delay in starting image fetch.
