PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To constitute an organic EL element with the use of an organic phosphor for emitting light of a given luminous color at high brightness and for easily obtaining a composition for application through solubilization or dispersion in forming a luminous layer. SOLUTION: The organic EL element has the luminous layer using an ellagic acid series compound expressed in a formula (1) as an organic phosphor laminated together with another layer as needed by pinching them with a pair of electrodes. Provided, in the formula (1), R denotes an alkyl group, alkyl ether group, alicyclic group, heterocyclic group, or aromatic ring group, and the two Rs may be the same or different.
