PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic ink character reading method and a reader capable of efficiently and surely processing magnetic ink characters which can not be recognized. SOLUTION: The magnetic ink character reading method is provided with a process (S101) for reading a printed magnetic ink character, recognizing the corresponding character and converting an unrecognizable magnetic ink character into a prescribed code, a process (S102) for storing recognized characters and prescribed codes as read data, a process (S106) for generating a message for urging the input of correction data corresponding to the prescribed codes and other prescribed messages in accordance with the number of prescribed codes in the read data, processes (S107, S108, S111, S112) for displaying the read data and the messages and receiving data inputted in accordance with the message, and a process (S109) for substituting the inputted correction data for the prescribed codes.
