PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing brass-plated steel wire suppressed in phosphorus level on the surface thereof without impairing its productivity and improved in adhesivity to rubber. SOLUTION: The method for producing the steel wire for reinforcing rubber articles comprises the following process. A brass-plated steel wire 10 is drawn in the final wet drawing step and then passed through a close assembly of any deformed steel wires 3 under such conditions as to be a specified value of passage length L(m), 90-110 g/cm<SP>2</SP>(8.82-10.78 kPa) in assembly pressure,≤0.1 mm in single steel wire 3 diameter and≥1.9 g/cm<SP>3</SP>in assembly density, wherein the passage length L(m) meets the relationship: (0.0018×S-0.23)×0.9<L<(0.0018×S-0.23)×1.1[ wherein, S is wire drawing speed(m/min)] so as to suppress the phosphorus level on the surface area of the steel wire 10.
