PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new filler which has strength development ability caused by a specific silanol group and a low bulk specific gravity and paper which is packed with the filler and has a low density and high paper strength. SOLUTION: The new filler for papermaking is a calcium silicate or silica-based filler for papermaking, which contains at least one kind of a silanol group among silanol groups of Q0, Q1 and Q2, has the ratio ((S<SB>0</SB>+S<SB>1</SB>+S<SB>2</SB>)/S<SB>all</SB>) of the sum (S<SB>0</SB>+S<SB>1</SB>+S<SB>2</SB>) of the peak area by the silanol groups Q0, Q1 and Q2 to the all peak areas (S<SB>all</SB>) derived from the silanol groups of 0.5-1 in a<SP>29</SP>Si-solid NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus) chart by a CP/MAS method and is made to have a specified bulk specific gravity. The paper having a higher bulk and less reduction in paper strength than paper packed with a conventional filler is obtained by packing the new filler to paper. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
