PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex excellent in high-speed coatability and giving coated paper with high surface strength and blank paper gloss. SOLUTION: A method for producing the copolymer latex for paper coating use comprises carrying out an emulsion polymerization, using an emulsifier, of a monomer mixture comprising (a) 10-80wt.% of an aliphatic conjugated diene, (b) 0.5-10wt.% of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and (c) 10-89.5wt.% of another copolymerizable vinyl monomer, wherein the emulsifier comprises (1) 1-15wt.% of a decylbenzenesulfonate, (2) 10-50wt.% of an undecylbenzenesulfonate, (3) 10-50wt.% of a dodecylbenzenesulfonate, (4) 5-40wt.% of a tridecylbenzenesulfonate, (5) 0-10wt.% of a tetradecylbenzenesulfonate, and (6) 0-20wt.% of another emulsifier component.
