PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new crosslinkable compound having multiple crosslinking groups and exhibiting banana type liquid crystal properties (a bent type molecular structure), a stable polymer having liquid crystal orientation fixed by crosslinking, an optical element containing the polymer, and a method for manufacturing the polymer. SOLUTION: The compound is represented by general formula (I) (wherein X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>, Y<SP>1</SP>, Y<SP>2</SP>, Y<SP>3</SP>and Y<SP>4</SP>are each independently an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom; Z<SP>1</SP>and Z<SP>2</SP>are each independently a single bond, an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom; P<SP>1</SP>and P<SP>2</SP>are each independently a polymerizable group; L<SP>1</SP>and L<SP>2</SP>are each independently a divalent binding group and may contain a cyclic structure; Cy<SP>1</SP>and Cy<SP>2</SP>are each independently a 5-10C aromatic group or a biphenylene group, which may be substituted; and each of the benzene rings in the formula may be substituted). The polymer contains the compound as repeating units. The optical element contains the polymer. The method for manufacturing the polymer comprises subjecting the compound to a light, an electric field or a magnetic field to effect crosslinking and polymerization through orientation.
