Production of an interactive support system consisting of geotextile-encased sand columns (20) and the existing ground comprises inserting columns of compact granular material with a casing of flexible, strong geotextile material into a soft layer (10), and inserting vertical drains between the columns, preferably in a pre-determined pattern. The encased columns and the drains are covered with a layer of loose material, preferably sand, to form an interactive self-regulating support system consisting of the sand columns, drains and surrounding ground which reacts during increasing loading with yielding of the columns to displace the loads at least partly to the surrounding soft layer and to maintain time- and load-dependent equilibrium. An Independent claim is also included for a casing made of geotextile for carrying out the above process.
