PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital image pickup device in which a volume of an effective sound is changed in accordance with an environmental status without accompanying complicated operation. SOLUTION: A digital camera acquires a level of an environmental sound from a microphone and compares the level of the environmental sound with a predetermined threshold (step ST43). When the level of the environmental sound exceeds the threshold, an output volume level is set to an ordinary reference volume level (step ST47). When the level of the environmental sound is lower than or equal with the threshold, an environment in which the digital camera is located is judged as an environment in which quietness is demanded, and the output volume level is set to a reduced volume level lower than the reference volume level (step ST48). Thus, the volume of the effective sound is reduced in accordance with the environment without accompanying complicated operation.
