PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet recorder performing high speed printing efficiently while reducing useless ink consumption, and to provide its controlling method and program. SOLUTION: Based on recording data received from an external unit, an MPU 42 selects the time interval of preliminary ejecting operation of a recording head 1. The time elapsed after previous preliminary ejecting operation is measured by means of a preliminary ejection timer 60. Preliminary ejecting operation is then controlled based on the elapsed time and the selected time interval of preliminary ejection. On the other hand, the MPU 42 makes a decision whether the recording mode is a monochromatic mode or a color mode based on the recording data and selects the time interval of preliminary ejection corresponding to the selected recording mode.
