PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simultaneously and smoothly carry out image compression of a moving image and a still image in an imaging apparatus etc. capable of recording the moving and the still images. SOLUTION: A memory for temporarily storing moving image data and still image data input from a camera, and an image compression means common to the moving and the still images are provided. The image compression means executes the compression processing of the still image data read from the memory while periodically executing the compression processing of the moving image data read from the memory with a predetermined period, so that the compression processing of the still image data is carried out in the intervals of the compression processing of the moving image data.
