A method for determining the optimal procedure for change of assignment or application for a printed material processing machine (10) with at least one control computer. The control computer compares the data of a first machine- application with the data of a succeeding machine-application and uses the comparison to establish a sequence of work involved during change of application. The sequence of work involved is assessed and calculated so that set-up time or idle-time is minimal during change of application or assignment. An INDEPENDENT CALIM is included for a device for determining optimal procedure during exchange of assignment or task on printed material machine.
