PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of the failure to determine an inherent area with achromatic characters and line drawing as an achromatic image area, caused by color components produced in an edge area of the achromatic characters and line drawing, resulting from phase difference of an RGB signal produced when reading the image. SOLUTION: A row of pixels of interest, and pixels before and after the pixel of interest is "achromatic color, colored, monochrome" is determined (S1). When satisfied, with reference to brightness of the three pixels, either XL(-1) > XL(0) > XL(1) or XL(-1) < XL(0) < XL(1) is determined (S2). If the above condition is satisfied, the determination result is corrected (S4) so that the pixel of interest is regarded as a pixel in a black edge area. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
