PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cause no damage to a part of a side-tube contacted with an external lead rod during work to connect the external lead rod and a feeder wire, and improve the reliability of a connected part of a caulking member connected to the feeder wire and the external lead rod, in a short arc type ultra high pressure discharge lamp having a very high mercury vapor pressure at lighting. SOLUTION: The external lead rod extending out from the side-tube is buried in one side-tube of side-tubes extending from both sides of an arc tube. The caulking member caulked previously to the feeder wire connected electrically to an external circuit is welded to the external lead rod. The caulking member is composed of nickel or a material containing nickel. The external lead rod and the caulking member are so welded that the longitudinal direction of the external lead rod and that of the caulking member intersect. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
