PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which is regulated by the strength characteristic at the pole surface on the back layer, and reduces head stain and head clogging with a superior electromagnetic conversion characteristic. SOLUTION: A bottom nonmagnetic layer and a top layer magnetic layer are provided on one surface of the supporting body of the magnetic recording medium and a back layer is provided on the other surface of the supporting body. The back layer has a multilayer structure. When a diamond pressing element, which is a trigonal pyramid having a radius of curveture at its tip section of 100nm, a blade angle of 65°and an interridge angle of 115°, is pressed into the back layer with a load of 6mgf (58.8μN), the indentation hardness (DH) on an unloaded curve is 25 to 95kg/mm<SP>2</SP>(245 to 931MPa) and the Young' modulus (W) is 500 to 1,500kg/mm<SP>2</SP>(4.9 to 14.7GPa).
