PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material tester capable of accurately measuring a test force in the breakage of a specimen. SOLUTION: A cross head 7 is lifted with a motor control signal 1a from a measuring control device 14 to apply the test force to the specimen 11, the test force and the displacement of the specimen due to strain are measured by a load sensor 12 and a displacement sensor 13, and the specimen 11 is photographed by a camera device 16 fitted to the support column 51 of a screw bar 5 and the photographed image is displayed on a monitor 17. By image processing on a personal computer 18, a variation in contrast within a monitored range formed in the image is detected, the breakage detection signal 18a is transmitted to the measuring control device 14, and the test force at that time is measured as a breakage test force.
