PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder arranged such that a code strip can move to the position of a sensor on the carriage side while following up without using a complex mechanism. SOLUTION: A code strip 561 is fixed, at one end thereof, to a chassis 11 with a tension being applied to the other end by means of a spring (not shown). A carriage mounting a recording head 7 is provided with an encoder sensor 56 for reading the code strip 561 optically. The carriage is arranged to move along the code strip 561 and the height can be altered depending on the type of a recording material (paper, CD, or the like). A strip lift part 50a for lifting the lower end of the code strip 561 when the height position of the carriage is elevated is formed integrally with the carriage. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
