摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical device capable of maintaining display quality while attaining low voltage and low power consumption, a method for driving the electro-optical device and an electronic appliance. SOLUTION: A common electrode voltage is set to be V<SB>coml</SB>by using a counter electrode modulation circuit. The same voltage with a voltage for writing black pixels is used as V<SB>coml</SB>. The V<SB>coml</SB>is applied to retention capacitance via a common electrode and a counter line. Subsequently, a writing operation is performed. In such a case, only white pixels are written. With respect to black pixels, on the other hand, the voltages of a pixel electrode is coincident with that of the common electrode and, therefore, the writing is not performed. After the writing of white pixels are completed, the voltage of a counter electrode is changed. Therein, the common electrode voltage is set to be V<SB>comh</SB>. Then, the writing is performed.
