PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems: that a recording device cannot identify the kind of recording medium or may make an error if a difference between sensor output signals is small; and that a sensor outputting signals with high sensitivity to all recording media is expensive to provide. SOLUTION: An identification device has a sensor whose output varies depending on recording media, and identifies the recording media according to the outputs of the sensor. The identification device has an adjusting means for adjusting the sensitivity of the sensor so that when the recording medium is to be identified, the sensitivity of the sensor is adjusted according to the output of the sensor.
