The fuel injection system has a high pressure pump (5) and a controller (21), whereby the high pressure pump is driven by the internal combustion engine and the high pressure pump feeds fuel into a common rail (9). The high pressure pump can be driven via a gearbox (25) operated by the controller. The gearbox can be a continuously variable gearbox, e.g. a sprocket chain gearbox.
