PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and document size discriminating method thereof, capable of improving discomfort (glare) entailed to an operator's eyes by detecting the width of a main scanning document with a CCD, allowing an document illuminating means to instantaneously light synchronously with a sensor for sensing the closure of a pressing plate, and instantaneously detecting the size of the document. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus has a light source for illuminating the document, reading means for reading the image of the document, first detecting means for detecting the width of the document in a main scanning direction by the reading means, second detecting means for detecting the width of the document in a sub-scanning direction, and lighting control means for allowing the light source to light. The apparatus is also provided with a discriminating means for discriminating the document size, on the basis of the second detection result detected by the second detecting means and the first detection result detected by the first detecting means which is detected firstly after the optical amount of the light source turned on by the lighting control means has been stabilized.
