The signature transport device (80) has separating belt system (20) which transport signatures (40A-40F) so that lead edge of one signature is offset from transport plane. The belt system transports the signatures in a manner which enables the lead edge of the signature and the trail edge of another signature to be separated in the direction perpendicular to the transport plane. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a printing press; and (b) a method for transporting signatures through a transport device.
