Carburizing process comprises feeding a hydrocarbon-containing treatment gas into a treatment chamber (3), and removing a waste gas stream from the chamber using a vacuum pump. The chamber contains a reference sample (6) having a defined carburizing surface. The mass stream of the treatment gas is determined by weighing the sample and the feed of the treatment gas into the chamber is regulated depending on the mass stream acquired.
