PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproducing method for MPEG data, especially capable of random access of MPEG data stored by VBR, with respect to the reproduction of moving picture data. SOLUTION: The reproducing method includes a step of storing in a table an average bit rate calculated from top and final time information of stored moving picture data, a step of detecting and storing time and positional information of top image group capable of random access and of final image group in the moving picture data, a step of calculating image group unit time from the number of frames among adjoining image groups and storing it in the table, a step of calculating a point to be accessed from the average bit rate stored in the table, and a step of starting the reproduction from the calculated access point while the time and positional information of the image group detected during the reproduction and the average bit rate in each group calculated from the information are stored in the table.
