PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To naturally deform the bit map fonts of a small size used in cellular phones, PDAs, etc. SOLUTION: The fonts for deformation are divided to rows and columns and costs are calculated in accordance with configuration pixel patterns by each of the rows and the columns. The costs in the scaling up processing indicate segment quantities, making the rows or columns of the smaller costs, i.e., the rows or columns having the pixel arrays closer to the segments hard to be scaled up when the deformation of the fonts is accompanied by scaling up. Also, the costs in the scaling down processing indicate the similarities with the adjacent rows and columns, making the rows or columns having the analogous pixel patterns nearby preferentially as the targets for scaling down when the deformation of the fonts is accompanied by scaling down. The rows and columns to be deformed are determined in accordance with the pixel configuration of the fonts to be deformed in actuality and therefore the naturally deformed fonts are obtained.
