PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving unit that can adequately activate an EL device having a luminescent layer consisting of a luminescent material layer having a short light emission falling time corresponding to the purpose of use. SOLUTION: This EL device 1 is so constituted that a main luminescent layer 54A consisting of a luminescent material having a characteristic of the light emission falling time of about 5μand a sub-luminescent layer 54B consisting of a luminescent material of ZnS:Mn are nipped between electrodes 52, 56 with insulation films 53, 55 therebetween. A control circuit energizes the EL device 1 several times by alternately applying the driving voltages having different poles in one driving term to both ends of the EL element 1.
