PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition for IPS (in-play switching) which is excellent in liquid crystal stability in a liquid crystal phase temperature range and at low temperatures and has a high permittivity anisotropy and a low viscosity; and an IPS display using the composition, usable in a wide temperature range, and having low-voltage driving characteristics and a short response time. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition, for active matrix IPS, contains 2-30 mass% at least one compound represented by formula (1) and 5-60 mass% at least one compound selected from the groups consisting of compounds represented by formulas (2), (3), and (4). In formulas (1), (2), (3), and (4), R<SP>1</SP>is a 2-15C alkenyl; R<SP>2</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>are each a 1-15C alkyl or the like; rings A<SP>1</SP>to A<SP>3</SP>are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or the like; Z<SP>1</SP>to Z<SP>3</SP>are each -COO-, -CH<SB>2</SB>O-, a single bond or the like; l, m, n, o, and p are each 0, 1 or 2; X<SP>1</SP>to X<SB>10</SB>are each H, F or Cl; Q<SP>1</SP>to Q<SP>3</SP>are each -OCH<SB>2</SB>-, -OCF<SB>2</SB>-, a single bond or the like; and Y<SP>1</SP>to Y<SP>3</SP>are each F or Cl.
