PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hair dye which can simply dye hair without dyeing the hands and the skin, has a high dyeing force equivalent to those of conventional commercially available hair dyes, and has an excellent conditioning effect. SOLUTION: This hair dye is characterized by comprising (A) a direct dye and (B) a dibasic acid diester compound represented by the formula (1): R<SP>1</SP>O-OC(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>CO-OR<SP>2</SP>(1) [R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently a 1 to 8C linear or branched alkyl, alkenyl or aryl; (n) is an integer of 0 to 18].
