PURPOSE: A mobile communication terminal and a method for controlling the same are provided to allow for ease of input of character data by eliminating the need of directly pressing the key buttons of the mobile communication terminal. CONSTITUTION: A mobile communication terminal(100) comprises a key input unit having a plurality of key buttons(130) including one or more photographing keys; a central processing unit for receiving the photographing start signal input by pressing the photographing key, generating a photographing driving signal, and driving a character recognition program; a CCD camera unit for receiving the photographing driving signal, photographing an object through a lens, and converting the values of brightness and color of the image input through the lens into an electrical image signal; an S-RAM for receiving and temporarily storing the image signal output from the CCD camera unit; a flash-ROM for storing the character data extracted from the image signal by the character recognition program; and a display for displaying the images and extracted character data.
