Vehicle steering apparatus

The vehicle has a steering column (2) with airbag (6). An actuator element activated during a collision releases a locking unit (22) to pivot the steering column. The actuator is formed by an additional airbag (38) supported on the vehicle body (18), which during a collision is inflated together with the airbag in the steering column. Inflation of the second airbag applies a torque to the steering column about its pivot axis (26), so that the column is moved in a direction towards the driver. The locking unit incorporates a driver-operated system to adjust the position of the steering column.
