To control the volume delivery of the compressor the gas pressure which biases the lift piston (4) during the time in which the control valve (3) is closed always lies above the gas pressure which is required to overcome the maximum possible reflux pressure. A controllable partial release of the lift cylinder (6) up to closing of the suction valve (1) is carried out through the fast-switching control valve in each period of the work beat. The theoretical release time of the entire volume to be released is maximum roughly equal to or less than half the duration of a work beat of the compressor.
