In a treatment plant (20), dissolved ammonium is extracted from the waste water stream (4), and is transferred to a body of secondary water (8). The secondary water is passed through an electrolysis station (24), where the ammonium is transformed to nitrogen gas. The capture and transfer can be performed via ion exchange (1,2,3), the electrolysis then being done on the regenerant water. Alternatively, the capture and transfer can be achieved by the removal of the dissolved ammonium gas through the raising of the pH of the waste water followed by the passing of the ammonia gas through acidic secondary water, in which the ammonia dissolves, the electrolysis then being performed on the acid-water (figure 2). The electrolysed ammonium-diminished secondary water can be re-used in further capture transfer episodes. The secondary water does not mix with the waste water stream. |
