Control unit, especially a drive control unit, has a function block (8) for at least a fixed installed control function and a second function block (9) for at least a second loadable control function. The second function block can be loaded with a real-time function during operation of the control unit. An Independent claim is made for a method for operating a control unit in which additional real-time functions can be downloaded to the control unit during its operation using first fixed installed control functions.
