Composite fibre-reinforced ceramic article and method for making same

Fiber-reinforced composite ceramic comprises a matrix containing silicon carbide and/or silicon. The composite ceramic has a density of more than 2.5 g/cc and a breaking elongation of more than 0.3 %. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of a fiber-reinforced composite ceramic, comprising forming a mixture containing carbon fibers, carbonized binder resin and additional carbon material having a bulk density of 0.7-1.8 g/cc, pressing the mixture to form a fiber-reinforced green body, carbonizing the green body to form a C/C body and infiltrating the C/C body with a silicon melt.
