PURPOSE: A monoclonal antibody specific for an epitope of inactivated feline immunodeficiency-encoded glycoprotein is provided, which monoclonal antibody is useful for the quantification of inactivated FIV or the determination of the potency of an inactivated FIV vaccine. CONSTITUTION: The monoclonal antibody specific for an epitope unique to an inactivated FIV-encoded glycoprotein is provided, wherein the inactivated FIV is FIV-Shiz or FIV-Petaluma; the glycoprotein is gp95 or gp130; the monoclonal antibody is produced from the cell line deposited as ATCC number PTA-4837; the monoclonal antibody is mAb 1D9; and the FIV has been inactivated by treatment with formalin. A method for the detection of an epitope unique to an inactivated FIV-encoded glycoprotein in a sample comprises contacting the sample with a monoclonal antibody specific for an epitope unique to an inactivated FIV-encoded glycoprotein to form a complex; and detecting the complex.
