<p>A metal article is provided with a protective coating by cleaning with the vapours of a boiling chlorinated lower hydrocarbon, and then immersing it in a composition comprising a chlorinated lower hydrocarbon and an organic phosphate complex. The organic phosphate complex being prepared by mixing one mole of phosphorus pentoxide, 0.2 to 12.5 moles of a copolymer of alkyl alcohol and a styrene, and 0.3 to 5.0 moles of an alkylphenol. This phosphate complex forms the subject of Specification 986,893. The metal article may be ferrous or non-ferrous, e.g. aluminium, magnesium, copper, brass, bronze, and white metal. The article may also be a galvanized or copper, nickel or cadmium plated ferrous surface or a chromated aluminium or zinc surface.</p> |
