981,746. Wells &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Nov. 5, 1962 [Nov. 6, 1961], No. 41812/62. Heading E1F. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for latching a cable to a base element having a latching shoulder formed thereon comprises a body 36, latching means 46, 47 mounted on the body for lateral extension therefrom, a rod 48 mounted in the body, a portion 49 of the rod bearing against the latching means to hold them in their extended position, means 55 for securing the cable 32 to the rod, means 70 fixing the rod to the body, and a reduced part 59 of the rod having a tensile strength less than that of the cable. The latch means are pivoted and forced outwardly by a spring 61 to engage slots 70, 71 in a tube 21 of an underwater wellhead. On upward tension being applied to the cable the latch means are first prevented from pivoting downwardly by the portion, but when the tension is increased to fracture the part the rod moves relatively to the body and the latch means pivot and permit the body to be withdrawn from the tube. To permit re-use of the apparatus the fracture rod may be replaced by a complete rod. In a modification the latches engage the underside of an internal flange in the tube. Specification 948,322 is referred to. |
