PURPOSE: An efficient and economic excitation circuit for a switched reluctance drive is provided to operate in both motoring and generating modes. CONSTITUTION: An excitation circuit for a switched reluctance drive comprises a plurality of switches(Ma,Mb,Mc,Md) for connecting a phase winding(16) to a supply. The plurality of switches further include a first set and a second set for supplying current to the phase winding(16) and returning current to the supply. The switches of the first and second set are capable of conducting current in both a first and a second direction and the first set and second set are capable of handling different peak currents.
