PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device for an elevator door as improvement of a conventional arrangement in which the optical axis passes along the plane of the sliding doors of elevator and the doors are inverted when the hand of any passenger intercepts the optical axis so as to prevent the hand from being drawn in and which involves such a problem that the door inversion is not possible even if the optical axis is intercepted in case a a photoelectric device is in failure. SOLUTION: When the car doors 7 and 8 are open, the optical axis is normally intercepted by the passenger to allow sensing that passenger exists, and if such sensing does not take place, a failure judgement is passed. Also in case the optical axis 12 is not intercepted by the hand 13 of any passenger before the doors are to be opened at the next stop of the elevator (normal situation), an alarm is given to inside the car 5, and the start timing of opening the doors 7 and 8 is deferred from the normal.
