PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately determine whether image data are chromatic or achromatic. SOLUTION: A color decision part 23 of a color image processing apparatus calculates a differential between a maximum value and a minimum value of RGB components in a differentiator 33, a hue of image data is calculated in a hue calculation part 34, and luminance of the image data is calculated in a luminance calculation part 35. A threshold determination part 36 determines a threshold based upon the calculated hue and luminance, a comparator 37 judges whether the image data are chromatic or achromatic based upon the differential calculated by the differentiator 33 and the threshold by the threshold determination part 36 and when it is judged that the image data are chromatic, a chromatic signal is outputted but when it is determined that the image data are achromatic, an achromatic signal is outputted.
